Bacteria Identified!
The doctor came in and said that she has Pseudomonas bacteria and that it did come from the central line. This is kind of shocking to everyone. It's not what they were expecting. They thought that she had some kind of bacteria from the gut.
I guess this bacteria is pretty nasty and they take it serious. The earliest we will be home is thursday. They took labs this morning and they have to grow for 48 hours. If they come back negative they have to stay that way for 48 hours before we can come home.
Of course I looked this up online which is alwasy a no no. LOL.... It's common in AIDS and Cancer patients and immunosuppressed patients. I read that sometimes it's not cought soon enough and that 50% of cases end in death. I can't tell you how happy I am that she ended up spiking that fever which made them start the cefipine by IV. This antibiotic should get rid of the problem. There is also one antibiotic that can be taken by mouth to get rid of it. I am sure we will be sent home on it too.
Thats all I know for now. The floor doctor is the one who gave us all the info. Things can always change after I talk to the Renal team.
Maybe Thursday!
We talked to the doctor and she said we are shooting for Thursday. It would be nice considering we hearing maybe 2 weeks. They want to keep her on IV antibiotics for 2 more days and they will send us home on something. We know for sure we will go home on the Flagyl to make sure the C-diff is gone. I think we lucked out and the c-diff stayed in the intestines and didn't get in the blood. There are still 2 other infections in her blood though.
We are getting ready to head down to get some dinner. Gillian is out of isolation so she can go down with us. We already went to the gift shop and got a Elmo balloon and candy.
No word yet.
I've heard a few different things. 48hrs of antibiotics and 7-10days. The renal team had a meeting at noon today, but haven't made it back down to tell me what the plan is yet.
On a positive not. Her latest C-diff came back negative. We are now out of isolation and Gillian is free to roam the halls. Now the only thing is she has an IV in her foot. She is able to walk but I am still worried she will blow it. Most kids don't even like walking when they are in there feet. Not Gillian she was up and moving.
The only downfall is being out of isolation means we can get a roomate. I don't like having roomates. Either they are loud and keep us up all night or Gillian keeps them up all night. I also have the chance of being kicked out of my room and put in a tiny side of a room. I will def. speak my mind if they try that. Expecially if we are going to be here another week. We already have to much stuff to fit in the A side of the room.
I found out they have 4 kidney patients up here now. One got transplanted on christams and they had to take it out the next day because it clotted. He or she than got a new one a week later. Then 2 more were transplanted on new years. Kidneys came in like crazy in December! I heard and saw the helicopter come in a while ago and mentioned to Gillian someone could be getting a kidney and the nurse was like we are full so I kinda hope not. Sounds bad but they are full to the brimm up here today.
Anyway I will update more later.
Broviac out!
Gillian went down the the OR today at 7:30am. She is already back upstairs in her room. Everything went great she is feeling good thanks to a dose of pain meds. We are getting ready for our first blood draw without the broviac. They called lab to come upstairs to do it.
I still haven't seen anyone from renal so I am not sure what the next step is. I will let you know when I find out!
